Dear Mum,

Dear Mum,

I recently delved into a sneak preview of Jake Needham's upcoming book, "Who the Hell is Harry Black?", courtesy of the author extending this generous offer in his letters to readers. Once again, I found myself engrossed in the vivid narrative that Jake is renowned for. This time, his intricate detailing of ballistics challenged and enthralled me, prompting a newfound curiosity and respect for this science - how it manifests in life-threatening situations, the ensuing chaos, and the permanent imprint it leaves on the fabric of human life.

Drawing inspiration and knowledge from Jake's work, let me take you through a dreadful memory from Southern Thailand. Beneath the calm veneer of a local festival, an unsuspecting Mitsubishi van harbored the seeds of calamity. Hidden within its benign exterior lay a homemade explosive device, a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) as it's called. A mobile phone's SIM card served as its unsuspecting trigger, reducing the complex process of detonation to a horrifically simple tap. The ensuing explosion transformed the mundane scene into a horrifying tableau of destruction and despair.

The van's transformation from an everyday vehicle to a weapon of chaos was eerily swift. The explosion morphed its metal exterior into a deadly spread of shrapnel. Ordinary household materials like ball bearings and nails, added to the bomb to maximize harm, became high-speed projectiles intent on maiming and killing. The aftermath echoed the mercilessness of the event, leaving an indelible mark not just on the physical landscape, but on the very soul of those left behind to pick up the pieces.

In my imaginative narrative, amidst the chaos, emerged a shadowy figure - let's call him Tan. An agent of retribution, Tan navigated through the mayhem with a singular mission. Armed with a humble six-shot revolver, his actions were a stark contrast to the deafening explosions. His target was the nefarious puppeteer orchestrating this terror from a concealed perch in a nearby townhouse. With cold resolve, Tan ascended the building, his revolver's report resonating through the cacophony, silencing the puppeteer of death. As the malevolent soul slumped onto the cold floor, a semblance of justice, albeit grim, resonated through the tumultuous ether.

Reading and reflecting on Jake's impeccable storytelling has not only increased my knowledge of ballistics but also deepened my understanding of how to weave such intricate details into the narrative, providing authenticity while keeping the readers engrossed. Jake's work and my experiences in conflict-stricken regions like southern Thailand have guided me to approach such subjects with the subtlety and sensitivity they inherently demand.

Mum, while the realities may be harsh and often quite painful to delve into, I believe it's important to showcase them accurately and respectfully in literature.
