**Chapter Six: The Knife's Edge**

My days in The Loft's kitchen were marked by determination and an obsession with perfection. I had a singular goal: to prove my worth in the company of Joe and Allen.

In the kitchen, my pursuit of excellence centered on prepping, a craft that demanded precision and skill. The knives became my companions, from the razor-sharp chef's blade to the dependable paring knife. They were tools through which I channeled my relentless drive.

As I meticulously sliced through vegetables and deftly removed tomato skins, my gaze would occasionally drift toward the rooftop sitting area on the seventh floor. Late October had arrived, but winter clung stubbornly to the city. There, on the rooftop, patients and their loved ones sought solace in the midst of their battles.

One particular day, while I was engrossed in the art of tomato peeling, my attention momentarily wandered to the outside world. A civilian-clad patient in his thirties sat on the rooftop with a family member. It was evident that he was a day patient, likely preparing for another round of radiotherapy. His presence served as a stark reminder of the struggles waged within these hospital walls.

Returning to my work, I focused on perfecting my skills. But a sudden disaster struck—an errant knife slipped from my grasp, narrowly missing my wrist, where exposed arteries lay just beneath the surface. It was a heart-pounding moment that highlighted the inherent risks of working in a kitchen.

Once again, my eyes were drawn to the male patient on the rooftop, connected to IV drips. His battle against illness underscored the resilience of the human spirit, a theme that began to weave its way into the narrative.

As I continued my daily toil in the kitchen, I couldn't escape the realization that this story was more than just a personal account of my experiences as a kitchen hand. It had transformed into a chronicle, a diary of lives intersecting within the confines of a hospital, where the boundaries between life and death blurred with each passing day.
